PSYB10H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Pluralistic Ignorance, Social Cognition, Availability Heuristic
Document Summary
Social cognition = study of how ppl think about the social world and arrive at judgement that help them interpret the past, understand present, and predict future. Snap judgements > how quickly we judge people first impressions . We trust those with infantile features rather than those with harder facial structures. People can make reasonably accurate judgement from thin slices of behaviour. There is often some validity to even extremely brief exposure to other peoples behaviour. It is unwise to commit to a set perception of ppl based on snap judgements. Info collected firsthand is ore accurate bc it has the advantage of not having been filtered by the accuracy of snap judgements someone else. Can also be deceptive when we fail to pay attention to info. Peoples behaviour sometimes can come from a desire to create an impression that is not a true reflection of their beliefs or traits. Gap btw inner reality and outer judgement.
