PSYB55H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Causal Inference, Temporal Lobe, White Matter
Document Summary
Anatomy of the hemispheres: wada test is a clinical procedure in which a barbiturate is injected to temporarily disrupt function in one of the cerebral hemispheres. Sylvian fissure separates the frontal cortex from the temporal lobe below: planum temporale is the surface area of the temporal lobe that includes wernicke"s area. Usually such areas are referred to as heterotopic b/c of their connections w/ one another. The wada test is used to identify which hemisphere is responsible for language b4 brain surgery is done. The 2 halves of the cerebral cortex are connected primarily by the corpus callosum, which is the largest fiber system in the brain. In humans, this bundle of white matter includes more than 250 mill axons. 2 smaller bands of fibers, the anterior and posterior commissures, also connect the 2 hemispheres. The corpus callosum has both homotopic and heterotopic connections.
