PSYB55H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8.10: Alpha Motor Neuron, Brodmann Area, Premotor Cortex
Document Summary
Ideational apraxia: a form of severe apraxia where the patient"s. A part of the body that can move is referred to as an effector. Alpha motor neurons prov the point of translation b/w the nerv syst and the muscular syst, originating in the spinal cord and terminating on muscle fibers. Action potentials in alpha motor neurons cause the muscle fibers to contract. Extrapyramidal tracts are neural pathways that project from the subcortex to the spinal cord. The corticospinal or pyramidal tract is made up of descending fibers that originate in the cortex and project monosynaptically to the spinal cord. 2 prominent subcortical areas inv"d in motor control are the cerebellum + the basal ganglia. The primary motor cortex (brodmann area 4) spans the anterior bank of the central sulcus and the posterior part of the central gyrus. It is the source of most of the corticospinal tract. Hemiplegia is a loss of the ability to produce voluntary mvmnt.
