Psyc02 chapter 1: writing for the behavioural and social sciences. The traditional medium for communicating research results is the scientific journal. Scientific journal is the repository of the accumulated knowledge of a field. Familiarity with the literature allows an individual investigator to avoid needlessly repeating work that has been done before, to build on existing work, and in turn to contribute something new. Journal articles: usually reports of empirical studies, literature reviews, theoretical articles, methodological articles, or case studies primary or original publications. Characteristics of these publications: articles represent research not previously published (first disclosure, articles are reviewed by peers before being accepted or rejected by a journal, articles are archival (retrievable for future reference) Empirical studies: reports of original research include secondary analyses that test hypotheses by presenting novel analyses of data not considered or addressed in previous reports (typically consist of distinct sections that reflect the stages in research process)
