Document Summary

Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (ghb) is both a drug and a neurotransmitter that has depressant effects on the central nervous system (cns) Ghb = white, tasteless powder that dissolves easily in water; recreational and instrumental uses. Ghb goes (cid:271)(cid:455) (cid:373)a(cid:374)(cid:455) st(cid:396)eet (cid:374)a(cid:373)es, i(cid:374)(cid:272)ludi(cid:374)g (cid:862)ga(cid:373)(cid:373)a-oh,(cid:863) (cid:862)geo(cid:396)gia ho(cid:373)e bo(cid:455),(cid:863) a(cid:374)d (cid:862)li(cid:395)uid e(cid:863) Ghb-associated sexual assault as date rape, although many of these assaults do not occur during a date and often the victim fails to even recall meeting the assailant. Drug enforcement administration categorized ghb as a schedule i controlled substance in 2000. Gbl serves as a prodrug by metabolically converting to ghb in the body. Low use of gbl; suggests that either users underreport ghb abuse or that ghb is being used for nonrecreational uses such as drug-facilitated sexual assaults. Researchers first synthesized ghb in 1960 as part of an effort to develop compounds with a chemical structure similar to the neurotransmitter gaba. After its discovery, physicians used ghb as an anesthetic agent.
