PSYC26 Chapter 6: Chapter 6
Document Summary
Lab and field various ways in which research settings can be classified (parke) Field carried out in the natural environment of the participant. Lab occurs in a setting specifically designed for research, different from the natural environment and to which the participant is brought solely for the purpose of the study. Iv manipulated in either lab or field setting. Dv measured in either lab or field setting. Classification of research settings 4 cells. 3 dimensions along which the naturalness of a setting can vary. Pros: degree of control of iv, possibility for systematic exploration of the ivs of interest in the study of some phenomenon, easy to measure dvs in lab setting. Cons: artificiality realistic but not real can this be applied to real life, ethical issues, subject to reactivity and response set. Pros: natural environment = more realistic, higher external validity. Pros: good control on iv, ecologically valid measure of dv. Cons: lab iv may be artificial and non-generalizable.
