Part v: physiological ecology as a way of thinking about organisms. Physiology: study of the metabolic process of energy and material to enable growth, maintenance, reproduction! Different ways to look at organisms: bag of many juices: container of aqueous solution where many chemical reactions occurs, library of information: detailed sets of genetic information (dna) with two special aspects they"re complex and heritable! Phylogenetic position: each organism is a twig on a tree; there are similarities and differences between all of their dna: allows classi cation of organisms in terms of their relatedness into a taxonomy! Physiological ecology (also called autecology): bag of juice idea is emphasized, relating back to the environment! Environmental factors determining distribution and abundance: environmental factors can be separated into biotic and abiotic! Biotic: arise from the actions of organisms (the living parts) : all organisms have redistricted spatial distribution, environmental gradient: occurs along a line drawn across a habitat!
