Document Summary

Matter classified into 3 types (based on comp: elements: simplest type of matter with unique p + c props. Macroscopic props (color + density) different because submicroscopic props are different. So, can"t be broken down into simpler matter. Each element is unique because the properties of its atoms are unique. Different states, but many in molecular form. Molecules: independent structure of 2(+) atoms bound together. Ex) o2 = diatomic molecules: compounds: consist of 2(+) elements that are bonded chemically. Ex) amm = 14 parts n and 3 parts 3 by mass. Many consist of molecules (but na sulfate/silicon dioxide) Each element has a fixed mass fraction. B/c each unit of compound made of a fixed # of atoms of each elements. Props are diff. from props of its component elements. Can be broken into its elements by c-change: mixtures: consist of 2(+) substances, elements or compounds, physically intermingled. Compounds of a mixture can vary in their parts by mass.
