CRI205H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Crime Prevention, Glasser'S Choice Theory, Data Mining
Document Summary
Choice theory - delinquent behaviour = rational choice made by a motivated offender who perceives the chances of gain outweigh the perceived punishment. Benefits of committing a crime outweigh the costs of committed said crime. Classical criminology - theory that people have free will, choose to commit crime for reasons of greed/need & can be controlled only by the fear of criminal sanctions. Society must provide the greatest good for the greatest number. Laws should be written w/ punishment prescribed in advance. Individuals give up some of their liberty in exchange for social protection. A violation of another person = violation of the social contract. People = motivated by pain & pleasure. Punishment should be limited to what = necessary to deter people from crime. Punishment should be severe, certain & swift. Law must be rational, transparent & just (or it itself is a crime) People"s choices can be controlled by the fear of punishment.
