IRE260H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Achievement Orientation, Machinist, Goal Orientation
Document Summary
Motivation: the extent to which persistent effort is directed towards a goal. Effort: the first aspe(cid:272)t of (cid:373)oti(cid:448)atio(cid:374) is the stre(cid:374)gth of the perso(cid:374)(cid:859)s (cid:449)ork-related behavior, or the amount of the effort the person exhibits on the job. Researches exerts mental effort, loading dock exerts physical. Persistence: persistence that individuals exhibit in applying effort to their work tasks. The loading dock worker who loads for 2 hours, but rests for the next 5 is not persistent. Direction: effort and persistence is about quantity, direction is quality. Goals: all motivated behavior has some goal or objective toward which it is directed. We have presented the preceding discussion from an organizational perspective- that is, we assume that motivated people act to enhance organization objectives, in this case, employee goals might include high productivity, good attendance, or creative decisions. Some people believe that people are motivated by factors in the external environment, while others believe they are self-motivated without the environment.
