HPS100H1 Chapter exert: The Law of Scientific Change
Document Summary
At any moment of history of science there are certain theories that the scieniic community of the ime accepts as the best available descripion their respecive domains. In addiion to accepted theories there are also certain methods employed by the scieniic community in theory assessment. This set of all accepted theories and all employed methods consitute what can be called the scieniic mosaic of the now. Scieniic mosaic is in a process of constant change. Theories that were accepted in the past may or may not be part of the contemporary scieniic mosaic. Nowadays the scieniic community accepts that best available descripion of physical processes is provided by general relaivity and the standard model of quantum physics. The same holds for the employed methods: most of the contemporary criteria actually employed in theory assessment have litle in common with the requirements employed in the aristotelian medieval period.
