PSL300H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter (All required for MIDTERM 1): Soft Tissue, Sex Organ, Cortical Reaction
Document Summary
Body monitors key functions to maintain homeostasis: regulated variables: bp, glucose, etc must be in a particular range to remain health, control mechanisms kick in if variable strays too far from its set point or optimum value. Two basic ptns of control: local and long-distance reflex control. Simples form: all control systems have three components: an input signal, a controller or integrating center. Integrates incoming info and initiates an appropriate response: output signal which causes a response. Local control: simplest form of control, restricted to tissue or cell involved. A relatively isolated change occurs in this type of control: nearby cell senses change in immediate area and responds. Widespread changes, or systemic in nature, req complex systems to maintain. Ex: maintaining bp to drive blood flow is systemic issue instead of local (ie whole system: long-distance communication & coordination with whole body needed. Reflex control: any long-distance pathway that uses nervous/endocrine system or both.
