Document Summary
Encoding: act of acquiring information & transferring it into ltm. Different ways of encoding influences ability to retrieve memories: maintenance rehearsal: act of repeating information- makes no meaningful connections. Poor memory- information quickly lost after rehearsal stops: elaborative rehearsal: relate information to something meaningful. Levels of processing theory: memory depends on the depth of processing the item receives: shallow processing: little attention to meaning, deep processing: close attention to meaning & relating it to other things. Presented subjects w/ words & asked 3 types of questions: physical feature of the word (capitalized, etc. , rhyming- asked whether 2 words rhymed w/ each other, fill-in-the-blank- see if the word fits semantically into the sentence. Each type of question mimics different depths of processing. After presentations asked to complete a memory test to recall the words. It"s difficult to define what creates deeper processing levels of processing theory is rarely researched used today.
