Document Summary

Chapter 4: social cognition summary: social cognition is a term used to refer to the processes of perception and judgement with which we make sense of the social worlds, our judgements shape interactions. First impressions (and beyond: first impressions can influence interactions with the individual even 9 weeks later. They are persistent regardless of whether they are right or not: within milliseconds we can determine whether a person appears angry, whether they are attractive, likeable, and trustworthy. Idealizing our partners: people judge their lovers with positive illusions that portray their partner in the best possible light. The knowledge is a mix if known information about the partner as well as idealized perceptions of them. Liabilities are not ignored, they are just considered less important: when we idealize our partners, we"re predisposed to judge their behaviour in positive ways, and we are more willing to commit ourselves to maintaining the relationship.
