Document Summary

Sociology takes facts and topics from newspapers, magazines, etc. , and puts them together (connects the dots) to establish trends and patterns. Sociology studies : how societies differ from one another, how people cooperate to achieve their goals, how our major institutions operate. Karl marx: wrote the manifesto of the communist party with friedrich engels, argues that capitalism creates two opposing classes, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat, this system is inherently unstable. Max weber: wrote the protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism, this argues that religion was one of the reasons why the economies of the west and the east developed differently. Social structure: any enduring, predictable pattern of social relations among people in society: social structure constrains and shapes our behavior, unlike psychologists and genetics researchers, sociologists study how people"s behavior changes from one situation or role to another. Four ways of looking at society: conflict theory, feminist theory, functional theory, symbolic interactionism, post-modernism.
