Document Summary
The ways we think and act, much of what we say, and the values and norms we live by are all shaped by society. As humans we are also free in important ways to create ourselves. The term, socialization refers to the lifelong social learning a person undergoes to become a capable member of society. The process of socialization is social because it is through social interaction with others, and in response to social pressures, that people learn the culture and internalize the expectations of the community to which they belong. The two major accomplishments of socialization are the internalization of social expectations- learning particular beliefs, norms, values, scripts, and the like- and developing a self-concept (or identity) Culture is a term that has been defined in a great many ways, and it proves to be as important, complex and elusive concept for us.
