Any behavior that is thought to violate a widely held social norm. Not all deviance and crime are visible to the public. Major criminal acts are reported but not minor assaults. Police have considerable discretion over what cases they pursue and how they record them. Appearance deviance: violating social expectation about how a person is supposed to look. Include less acceptable or usual ways of dressing. Stigmatization: disgrace and marginalization because of life circumstances, or physical feature that are not socially accepted. It gives rise to deviant communities and subculture. Appearance norm and other norms give rise to one outcome - could be intentional or unintentional. The regulation of people"s appearance and the achievement of the appearance of uniformity. Regulation is internalized through a process - governmentality (michel foucault) Governmentality - the way in which the state exercises control over, or governs, its citizenry.
