Document Summary

Real-life sociology chapter 7: gender inequality and gender domination. Notions of femininity and masculinity may be underscored and exaggerated in the social media environment and are closely tied to fashion, style, celebrity and presentations of the body as form of aesthetics. Gender: the social construction of what men and women should be like in terms of appearance, behaviours, preferences and social roles and expectations. Until the mid 1950s, discussions around gender were considered either unimportant or private. Since then, society has seen a shift in its approach to topics of gender and hence, discussions in the media are now more open, if highly polarized. A general reduction in the stigma associated with being an individual outside typical notions of sex and gender has allowed for greater understandings of the diversity that exists in and between sex, genders, sexual identities and sexual orientations. These sex and gender distinctions create a system of social difference that affect people"s lives.
