Document Summary
Real life sociology chapter 16: social movements and collective actions. Social movements are central to how citizens express their dissatisfaction with existing power structures and elites and advocate for social change through forms of collective action. Elites can slo use social action to consolidate and increase their power. Social movements have a long history and are constantly undergoing change. Recent developments in information and communication technologies (icts) have provided activists with new tools for spreading information at low cost to far- reaching audiences. Thousands of activists can engage in a campaign from a distance and help spread the message via social media. This line participation has received criticism and has been called slacktivism or clicktivism. Slacktivism (or clicktivism): derives its meaning though the laissez-fairer attitude and simplistic motions (clicking a like button, for example) required to show support fo a social movement in comparison to past forms of activism.
