Foucault argued that many modern disciplines took place in a discursive context where the gure of man had emerged as a complex subject and object of knowledge that could be empirical. Groups will often have tremendous internal variety but still hold a sense of belonging to each other. Says we mustn"t fall into assumption that anthropology should be uni ed. Franz boas, founder of anthropology did not see the unity of the four elds lasting and instead thought it would be replaced by something else. He would be astounded by the alliance"s longevity. Before, anthropologists would try and tackle all elds but now no one is as opportunistic. He is the only one who did all four elds. Linguistics is often seen as a sub eld of socio-cultural anthropology. Possible later exam question: why is the book called the sacred bundle.
