Four of the five novels we are reading are named after there protagonists- jane eyre, emma, frankenstein, etc. Emma woodhouse described page 1- handsome, clever, and rich, happy disposition. Many traits that the character already has, she does not have to work for it during the book like most protagonists. In contrast to jane eyre- she is poor and has to work towards the things that emma has already. Theme of education- she has not been tutored by many authority figures. Lack of self awareness- she is not aware that she has any flaws to work on. Novel will provide moments where emma will become vexed and this will initiate her moral growth. She was the woman of the house- sister married, and mother died. Why are novelists fond of orphan- immediate sympathy on the part of the reader for outcast.
