The pacific plate went under the eurasian plate causing a snap, producing an earthquake. This type of interaction occurs for 100 seconds before a major earthquake occurs with a 60 second warning. The eurasian plate springs back causing a tsunami. Due to sendai consisting mostly of flat farmlands, there are no high grounds to stop the tsunami waves from moving in. Some land areas along the coastline fell below sea level due to the rupture. With the coastline lowered, the overflowing water caused the generators to fail. With the failure of the generators, there is no power to cool the reactor resulting in a risk of meltdown.
