Health Sciences 2300A/B Chapter 2: Key Points/ Summary
Document Summary
Generalized cell: cell biology or cytology: the study of cellular structure and function, compartmentalization: the isolation of specific kind of chemical reactions within specialized membrane enclosed structures in the cell. ~ 200 types of cells in the body: three principals parts of a cell: plasma membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, plasma membrane: is the cells outside flexible surface. Regulates flow of materials inside and out of the cell. Plays a key role in communication between cell and its external environment. See the fluid mosaic model- continually moving sea of lipids containing many proteins. Proteins may free float or be anchored like islands. Some proteins act as gate keepers regulating the travel of other molecules and ions: cytoplasm: the content between the plasma membrane and the nucleus. Many integral proteins are also glycoproteins (proteins with carbohydrate groups on the ends that stick out into the extracellular fluid: glycocalyx is a sugary coat formed on the carbohydrate portions of glycolipids and glycoproteins.
