Health Sciences 2300A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Bone, Medullary Cavity, Sesamoid Bone
Document Summary
Long bones have a shaft and head. They are slightly curved so they can hold weight. Consist of mostly compact tissue and some spongy tissue. Consist of mostly spongy bone and a small layer of contact bone. Flat bones thin and consist of two layers of compact bone enclosing a layer of spongy bone. Irregular bones complex bones with odd shapes (vertebrae). Metaphyses neck, where growth plates are located. Articular cartilage thin layer of hyaline where bone joins with another none. Periosteum surrounds bone that is not covered by articular cartilage. This attaches by perforating fibres that are thick bundles of cartilage that extend into the bone"s extracellular matrix. Medullary cavity (marrow cavity) hollow spaces within the shaft that contains fatty yellow bone marrow. Endosteum thin membrane that lines the medullary (marrow) cavity. The most abundant mineral salt is calcium phosphate, which combines with calcium hydroxide to for crystals of hydroxyapatite.
