Document Summary
Methods of data collection in qualitative research: interviews and focus groups. Gill, p. , stewart, k. , treasure, e. , & chadwick, b. (2008). The most common methods in qualitative healthcare research are focus groups and interviews. This paper explores these methods in details. The three types of research interviews are semi-structured, structured, and unstructured. Structured interviews are verbally administered questionnaires, in which a list of predetermined questions are asked, with little or no variation and with no scope for follow-up questions to responses that warrant further elaboration (gill et al. , 2008, pp. 291) They are easy to conduct but only allow for limited responses and are not useful if in-depth answers are required. Unstructured interviews are done with minimal organization and are often not reflective of preconceived ideas or theories. It usually starts with an open-ended question and progresses based on the initial participant response.
