Organized sports for adolescents and young adults in most developed countries are tied to community based athletic clubs funded by members or a combination of public and private sources. Interscholastic sports have become an accepted and important part of canadian high schools, colleges and universities. Interscholastic is used to refer in a broad sense to organized competitive sports carried out between educational institutions. Interschool sports between high schools government by the canadian school sport federation and ten provincial school athletic associations: primary and middle schools often have interchool competitions like track and field etc. Intercollegiate sports between community colleges governed by the canadian colleges athletic association and 5 regional conferences. Interuniversity sports governed by canadian interuniversity sport and 4 regional conferences. Interscholastic sports are distinguished from intramural sports, played within an educational institution and organized in various ways.
