(cid:863) if shock is left untreated, cardiopulmonary arrest will result. Compensated shock occurs when poor perfusion exists without a decrease in bp. In hypotensive shock, inadequate perfusion is accompanied by a drop in bp. Infants and young children are different from their adult counterparts in that their cardiac output depends on their heart rate, not their stroke volume. Shock can be categorized into four types: hypovolemic, distributive, cardiogenic, and obstructive. Hypovolemic: characterized by a decrease in preload that results in low stroke volume and reduced cardiac output. Distributive: shock is the result of a loss in the systemic vascular resistance. Cardiogenic shock results from an ineffective pump, the heart, with a resultant decrease in stroke volume.
