Abnormal behaviour personally distressing, dysfunctional and/or so culturally. What is abnormal? deviant so that other people judge it to be inappropriate or maladaptive. Criteria b-d reflect cultural or even more widespread beliefs about what is appropriate, so that judgements about what is normal and what is abnormal. Criteria f seem to govern decisions about abnormality and at least one of them applied to any behaviour regardless if they are abnormal. We are likely to label a behaviour abnormal is they are intensely distressing to the individual. As well a criteria for abnormality is societies judgements concerning the deviance of a given behaviour people are usually viewed as psychologically disturbed if they violate social norms. Norms behavioural rules that specify how people are expected to think, feel, and behave. Intense, frequent, inappropriate anxiety but no loss of reality contact (includes phobias, panic, ocd, ptsd) Marked disturbances in mood (including depression and mania (extreme elation and excitement))
