According to freud, instinctual drives generate psychic energy, which powers the mind and constantly presses for either direct or indirect release. Freud divided personality into 3 separate but interacting structures: Internalized by the child through identification with their parents, and what is (cid:862)right(cid:863) a(cid:374)d (cid:862)(cid:449)ro(cid:374)g(cid:863) Ego tries to delay gratification until conditions are safe and appropriate. Superego tries to block gratification permanently moralistic goals take precedence over realistic ones i. e. guilt over sexual activity in marriage because it has internalized the idea that it is (cid:862)dirt(cid:455)(cid:863) When the ego confronts impulses that threaten to get out of control or is faced with dangers from the environment, anxiety results. However, when realistic strategies are ineffective in reducing anxiety, the ego may resort to defence mechanisms that deny or distort reality.
