Developmental psychology the study of the human physical, cognitive, social, and behavioural characteristics across the lifespan. Interaction between genetics and the environment: changes are a result of aging, processes determined by genes and experience/practice. Cross-sectional design used to measure and compare samples of people at different ages at a given time: cheap and easy to administer. Cohort effects differences in between people that results from being born in different time periods (ex. nutrition, medical advances, norms, etc. ) Longitudinal design follows the development of the same set of individuals through time: costly, and time consuming. Attrition occurs when participants drop out of a study. Zygote the initial cell formed when the nuclei of an egg and sperm fuse. Germinal stage the first phase of prenatal development which spans from conception two weeks: zygote splits and the fetus and placenta start forming.
