Document Summary

Emotion: feeling, or affect, that occurs when people are engaged in an interaction that is important to them, especially one that influences their well-being. Emotions can be positive (enthusiasm, joy, love, etc. ) or negative (anxiety, anger, guilt, and sadness). Maturation of the cerebral cortex allows a decrease in unpredictable mood swings and an increase in the self-regulation of emotion. Children learn the display rules of their culture, which are the rules for when, where, and how emotions should be expressed. Emotions are important in interpersonal contexts so that our emotions can signal to others how we feel, and also to regulate out own emotions. Emotions are also linked to an individual"s goals in that an individual who overcomes an obstacle to attain a goal is happy, but not the person who must abandon a goal as unattainable. Emotional intelligence: involves perceiving and expressing emotions accurately, understanding emotion and emotional knowledge, using feeling to facilitate thought, and managing emotions effectively.
