Linguistic relativity: the idea that the language we speak influences the way we perceive and think about the world around us. Linguistic determinism: the proposal that people can only perceive and categorize the world according to the structures offered by their language. Innatism: the proposal that perceptual and cognitive processes are not influenced by language in any way. Focal colour: the best example of a colour name and the center of a color category. The best shade of that colour to represent the colour (like apple red as opposed to dark red). Grue: a single basic colour term in a language that includes both blue and green. A delayed match-to-sample task: an experimental procedure in which a participant first sees a target item and then after a delay is asked to choose which of two novel items is more like the target.
