Chapter 5: words: 5. 1: anatomy of words. Word a minimal unit of meaningful speech that can stand alone. Concept a mental representation of some sort of statistical regularity in our experience. The set of processes involved in changing the shape of a word to fit its grammatical context is known as the morphology of that word. The most basic form of a word is called its lemma and the set of all forms a word can take is called its lexeme.
