Document Summary

Social perception: the study of how we form impressions of other people and make inferences about them. Nonverbal communication: the way in which people communicate, intentionally or unintentionally, without words. Nonverbal cues include facial expressions, tone of voice, gestures, body position and movement, the use of touch, and eye gaze. Mirror neurons: respond when we perform and action and when we see someone perform the same action. For example, smelling something gross fires the same way in our brain as when we see someone in a movie wrinkle their nose in disgust. Or when we see someone crying, the same neurons are fired in our brains as if we were crying. Darwin had a theory that all primary emotions conveyed on the face are universal. Affect blend: a facial expression in which one part of the face registers one emotion while another part of the face registers a different emotion.
