Chapter 2 the psychology of police investigations. Psych tasks collection and evaluation of investigative info obtained from suspects, investigate decision making esp those that require in-depth criminal behaviour understanding. Confession evidence viewed as prosecutor"s most powerful evidence must be backed in ns by some other form of evidence but in some countries may be solely enough to convict people. Whether corroborative evidence collected or not, people who confess more likely prosecuted begins real trial and other aspects may be unnecessary. Police interrogation process whereby police interview suspect for purpose of gathering evidence and obtaining a confession goal to gain important info from suspect and obtain confession. Inherently coercive process of extracting a confession foreign env, no support, police part of system that gives them powers over suspect. Overt acts of physical coercion (mid-20th century whipping, 80s stun gun) less frequent and replaced with subtle psych based techniques (lying about evidence, promise lenience, imply threats)
