Psychology 3140F/G Chapter Notes - Chapter OWL: Competition Model, First Language, Sestertius
Document Summary
The non-target language representations have the most impact when they are highly familiar and therefore activated quickly and strongly. A priming paradigm has been used to investigate whether phonological representations are activated by a prime in one language facilitates reading similarly pronounced targets in the other language. Cao et al (2013): chinese-english bilinguals in fmri studies. Showed reduced activation in the right middle occipital gyrus, an area involved in visual word form processing with stronger activation when reading. A study with english-chinese bilinguals had greater activation of the left medial frontal gyrus when reading chinese then when reading english. There are some language-specific representations for word recognition in proficient early bilinguals. Competition model: language learning involves learning cues that help determine form-function relations when interpreting sentences. The strength of cues depends on their availability and reliability. The more exposure one has to one"s l1, the stronger the relevant cues become.
