Chapter twelve: media: media comes from the latin word medium, meaning in the middle . English medium meant a connection between two things or a way of conveying something from one place to another: mass media suggests communication addressed to a large, anonymous and unknown audience. Includes print publications, telecommunications, broadcast technologies, cable tv, domestic electronic devices, and an array of new digital means of communications (internet: media technologies today have accomplished what marx called the annihilation of space by time . Near-instantaneous transmission of messages around the globe makes physical distance less of a barrier to communication. Postindustrial era society could be the one that would finally escape from the poverty and class division of the old industrial society: bell"s notion of the postindustrial society was soon renamed the information society. Some of these technologies bring the capacity for a two-way communication; enable citizens to be transmitters as well as receivers of information (active producers rather than passive consumers)
