Chapter 6 family life and parental influence. Despite the fact that many people believe that parents and family have the most significant influence on youth, environmental factors such as their peers and genetics often have more of an influence than parents do. Some researchers still claim that there is a direct influence regarding family life and parenting styles, however in this field of youth studies debates/disagreements are based on empirical data. Research is primarily focused on how parents can prepare their youth for life transitions, and provide them with resources needed to overcome the obstacles they may face while aspiring towards upward mobility. Some questions regarding the control parents have over the fate of their children are: Steinberg concluded that there is enough evidence that proves that adolescence benefit from having authoritative parents who are firm, warm, and accepting of their needs for autonomy psychologically.
