Document Summary

Chapter 4: education revolutionized: the growth of modern schooling. Emerging around the 16th century school classes were originally organized by ability not by age: students of varying ages (but the same knowledge ability) met in one large room were drilled in the basics (reading & writing) Age grading began in the 19th century: two worries were central: rushing students too fast and mixing students of different temperaments (eg immature young children / mature older children) Early 1800s informal school in ontario was common: family tutoring, private schooling, religious schools. By 1807 a public government funded system of schooling emerged: this system involved children of all ages gathering under one teacher, learning mathematics, reading, writing and some religion. By mid century a system of schooling began to emerge. Enrolments and attendance: creating a universal experience: support: immigration raised concerns for a need for social cohesion and a common value system.
