Sociology 2206A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Selection Bias, Interrupted Time Series, Field Experiment
Document Summary
Experiential research: builds on the principles of a positivist approach, experimental research is the strongest for testing causal relationships because the three conditions for causality (temporal order, association, and no alternative explanations) are best met in experimental designs. Random assignment: dividing subjects into groups at the beginning of experimental research using a random process, so the experimenter can treat the groups as equivalent. Subjects: in experimental research, the cases or people used in research projects and on whom variables are measured. 7 parts of the experiment: treatment or independent variable, dependent variable, pretest, post-test, experimental group, control group, random assignment. Pretest: the measurement of the dependent variable prior to the treatment. Post-test: the measurement of the dependent variable after the treatment. Experimental group: the group that receives the treatment. Control group: the group that does not receive the treatment. Debrief: when a researcher gives a true explanation of the experiment to subjects after using deception.
