Document Summary

Criminology has been a male-entered enterprise which has left when invisible in criminological inquiry. In 2011, only 1/5 persons accused by canadian police was female. Violence against female victims was traditionally not a major area of concern. Criminologists have also failed to consider the maleness of their subject, focusing mainly to the crime. Feminist engagement with criminology began over 40 years ago. Then critiqued by writers like dorie klein (1973) and carol smart (1976) that focused on the sexism of theories. Other writers then broadened their focus to include the invisibility of women in the mainstream theories within the discipline. Understands the difference between men and women as biologically based: women were viewed as naturally inferior to men, which explained women"s criminality. Lombrosso and ferrero suggested women have limited intelligence. Atavistically, women (and non-white males) were seen as less advanced with fewer signs of degeneration than men.
