Job design: the structure, content and configuration of a person"s work tasks and roles. Tries to capitalize on intrinsic motivation as a motivator. Identify characteristics that make some tasks more motivating then others and capture these in the design of jobs. With uneducated work force specialization was key to efficient productivity. Job scope: the breadth and depth of a job. Breadth: the number of different activities performed on a job. Broad jobs = workers do a number of different tasks. Depth: the degree of discretion or control a worker has over how work tasks are performed. Deep jobs = freedom in planning how too the work. High scope jobs have both great breadth and depth. (ex- professor). These provide more intrinsic motivation than low scope jobs (ex- assembly worker). These allow them to fulfil higher order needs. Expectancy theory suggests high-scope jobs provide intrinsic motivation if the outcomes derived from them is attractive.
