BU288 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Performance Appraisal, Signalling Theory, Stereotype Threat
Document Summary
The process of interpreting the messages of our senses to provide order and meaning to environment. Help sort out and organize the complex and varied inputs received by our senses (5 senses) Interpretation is important here base actions on interpretation of reality that perceptual system provides. Experience = most important characteristic of perceiver that influences impression of perceiver. Needs influence perceptions by causing us to perceive what we wish to perceive. Emotions like anger, happiness, fear can influence perceptions. E. g. worker upset over not getting promotion can perceive consolation provided by co-worker who did get promotion as gloating. Perceptual system can defend against unpleasant emptions perceptual defence. Ambiguous targets especially susceptible to interpretation and addition of meaning. Reduction in ambiguity might not be accompanied by greater accuracy.
