Helps explain political and social impact of images and built environment. When a person makes an image or designs a building, they are attempting to manipulate. Important to understand techniques artists and architects use to create meaning the viewer. Even photographs involve some sort of representation of meaning. Taking a photo is never just an imitation of what photographer is looking at, but an attempt to construct meaning. Knowing this makes it easier to understand how cultural production can affect other aspects of meaning-making such as economics or politics. Colour affects us physiologically, psychologically and symbolically. Physiological level = we can note that some colours have higher frequency than others and are less noticeable to us. Ex: violet has highest frequency, less noticeable to us than red. Which is why red is used for stop signs, but red also applies to more than stop signs.
