PS101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Cell Nucleus, Neuroglia, Myelin
Document Summary
Cells in the nervous system fall into major categories of glia and neurons. The individual cells in the nervous system that receive, integrate, and transmit information. Basic links that permit communication within the nervous system. Minority receive signals from outside nervous system (from sensory organs) or carry messages from nervous system to muscles that move body. Come in a tremendous variety of types and shapes. Cell body containing cell nucleus and much of the chemical machinery common to most cells. Rest of neuron is devoted exclusively to handling information. Branched, feeler-like structures that are the parts of a neuron that are specialized to receive information. Information flows from here to the cell body then travels away from soma along the axon. Long, thin fibre that transmits signals away from the soma to other neurons or to muscles or glands. Wrapped in cells with high concentration of a white, fatty substance called myelin.
