Stressors are events or situations that represent a threatened or actual loss of resources. Proximal stressors (1) major life events can be measured using social readjustment scale, standardized list of stressful life events assigned different points and the sum represents an individual"s degree or exposure to stress. Life events include entrances ex marriage or childbirth, and exits ex death of loved one, firing. Exit have stronger association with psychological distress than entrances. However standardized lists of life events are not sensitive to cultural and personal meaning of those events to the individual (2) life transitions require learning of new skills or assumption of new roles. Impacts of life transitions are contextual and requires own combo of coping skills (3) daily hassles applies the life events approach to short term, smaller scale events. Family argments, traffic jams, conflicts at work etc. Scores based on the frequency or intensity of the hassles themselves.
