Recognizes almost all children can deal w one risk factor without it increasing risk of negative outcomes, most can handle 2 risk factors. When you get up to four, chances of negative outcome increases exponentially. It is not about the presence of risk but the level of cumulative risk. Children who overcome multiple risk factors to become competent adults are resilient. Resiliency: ability of some individuals to overcome adverse conditions/experience healthy development. Individual differences: cognitive abilities, self perceptions of competence, confidence, temperament/personality, self regulation skills, positive outlook on life. Relationships: parenting quality, close relationships w competent adults, connections to prosocial and rule abiding peers. Community resources and opportunities: good schools, connections to prosocial organizations, neighbourhood quality. 70% of kids exposed to 4+ risk factors in kauai longitudinal study did not display resiliency in childhood (displayed significant issues by age 18) however were fine by middle age.
