The images of women and men that we see around us are pervasive and often taken for granted, despite their enormous influence. Although they change over time, they bombard us with images of women as thin, as sex objects, and as tied to home. Such images create a concept of the proper roles for women and men, significantly influencing our self-esteem and our definition of others. Language shapes our definition of reality, but it can also transform how we think about gender. Many people think that feminist criticisms of sexist language are trivial, but language shapes our definition of reality. When language embeds sexist assumptions, it can shape how and what people think. Thus, (cid:272)hanges in language (cid:271)oth refle(cid:272)t and generate (cid:272)hanges in people"s (cid:272)ons(cid:272)iousness.
