Software set of computer programs that enable the hardware to process data. Computer programs sequences of instructions for the computer; process of writing/coding a program is called programming. Documentation written description of the functions of the program; helps the user operate the computer system and helps other programmers understand what the program does. Some overall trends in software are: complexity, cost, number of defects (errors) Software defects (bugs): fix this by better design and planning at beginning of development process. Software licensing: many people copy software but making copies without manufacturer"s permission is illegal. Open systems group of computing products that work together; in open system the same operating system with compatible software is installed on all computers that interact within an organization. Propriety software purchased software with restrictions on its use, copying, modification. Open-source software available at no cost to developers or users; distributed with license terms that ensure that its source code will always be available.
