56 views8 pages

Document Summary

Mendelian inheritance indicates the role of genes is clear. Pea experiments (p 219: garden pea (pisum sativum, easy to grow, clearly defined characters or traits, true-breeding varieties, self-fertilized plants (same trait each generation, easy to cross, cross-pollination between parents. Genes for genetic characters occur in pairs (two alleles for each character) If two alleles of a gene are different, one allele is dominant over the other. If both alleles are present the trait associated w/ 1 allele will appear instead of the trait associated w/ the other allele. E. g. allele for purple pea flowers is dominant & white flowers is recessive. 2 alleles of a gene segregate (separate) & each enters a different gamete. 2 of the same allele: aa = 2 of the same allele, aa = 2 of the same allele. 1 of each allele: aa, a = 1 allele, a = the other allele. Capital means dominant & lowercase is recessive.
